Eskom load shedding - Power backup options

There are a few options for overcoming the negative effect of Eskom load shedding:

Option 1: Backup power system;

  • This system consists of an inverter charger and battery bank.
  • The inverter converts the 12/24/48 Volt DC (Battery) power to 220/230 volt AC (house power)
  • The build in charger charges the battery bank from the grid and keeps the batteries full for when you need it as a power backup.
  • When the power goes off the inverter automatically switches over to the battery bank as your main source of power.
  • When the power goes on again the batteries are charged up again.
  • The inverter charger can be wired into your DB board and will automatically change over and keep your loads running when the rolling blackouts come around.
  • You can also do this manually by plugging an extention into the inverter and connecting
  • For home use basic loads like lights, plugs for Television and DSTV, fridge/freezer use, etc are run on the backup system.
  • For business or office use; basic loads like lights, Point Of Sale (POS) PC's, Computer plugs, Tills, Etc  is run on the backup power system.
  • There is an option to add solar panels and a charge controller so that the batteries can be charged with solar energy.
  • A basic system with an inverter charger and 2 Royal 105Ah batteries (720 watt hours of backup power) starts at R10300.

Option 2: Solar system;

  • A complete solar system with solar panel(s), a charge controller, battery bank and inverter.
  • Some of the loads can be kept on the solar system permanently; like your lights, television and fridge(s).
  • OR these appliances and lights (loads) can be run when a backup is needed, typically plugged into an extention or special purpose wired circuit. The inverter can also be plugged into a wall socket to supply power to the circuits under certain conditions (like a generator would be).
  • The benefit of a solar solution is that the solar panels can keep the battery bank full and recharge it even if multiple days of blackouts are experienced.
  • A basic system with a 120 Watt Tenesol Solar Panel, 12 Amp Charge Controller, 2 Royal 105Ah batteries (720 watt hours of backup power) and a 330 Juta converter starts at R5411.
